Frequently asked ultrasound questions

Everything parents-to-be want to know about 3D/4D ultrasound — answered with care so you can relax and enjoy the experience.

3D ultrasound captures a still image of your baby, while 4D, HD, and 5D ultrasounds bring the experience to life with real-time movement, creating a video-like view. Today’s most advanced option is HD/5D ultrasound, which uses cutting-edge software to enhance focus and simulate natural lighting. This technology delivers crystal-clear, lifelike images that let you see your baby’s features in stunning detail and create a truly memorable keepsake experience.

Yes, 3D and 4D/HD/5D ultrasounds use the same safe soundwave frequencies as the standard 2D ultrasounds your doctor performs. Ultrasound technology has been trusted for more than 40 years, and according to the FDA, when used properly there are no confirmed risks or side effects. This makes elective ultrasound sessions a safe and reassuring way to bond with your baby.

No, we do not accept insurance because this is an elective procedure.

The best time for an elective ultrasound depends on what you want to see. Many parents choose to schedule two sessions — one between 15–26 weeks to view the baby’s whole body and another between 25–34 weeks for a closer look at their baby’s face. Between 28 and 32 weeks, babies develop more fat, which makes their facial features even clearer and more defined. After 34 weeks, space in the womb becomes limited, which can make capturing images a bit harder, but we often still get amazing pictures all the way up to 39 weeks.

Starting at 14 weeks, we can determine your baby’s gender with a very high level of accuracy. If you are past 14 weeks and we can’t clearly see the gender during your session, we offer a free weekday rescan within 14 days. Most often, a second visit is only needed when the baby’s position makes it difficult to get a clear view.

Doctors often recommend maintaining good hydration throughout pregnancy, as drinking plenty of water supports healthy amniotic fluid levels and keeps them clear. While hydration can improve ultrasound image quality, some factors — like your baby’s position, your body type, and the natural amount of amniotic fluid — are outside the sonographer’s control.

or the best ultrasound images, try to stay well-hydrated in the days before your appointment to keep amniotic fluid clear. About 30 minutes before your 3D, 4D, or 5D ultrasound session, drinking a small glass of fruit juice can gently wake your baby and encourage movement — unless your doctor has advised otherwise.

Depending on the ultrasound package you select, your session will last between 10 and 25 minutes. After your scan, we welcome you to browse our studio for fun extras like gender reveal products and adorable heartbeat animals — the perfect way to make your visit even more memorable.

Absolutely! We encourage you to bring your friends and family to share this unforgettable moment with you. Children are welcome too, making it a truly special experience for everyone.

ecause this is an elective ultrasound, we do not contact your doctor before your session. We do require that you are currently receiving prenatal care, and we encourage you to speak with your doctor about any medical concerns. Please note that our ultrasound technicians cannot diagnose medical conditions or provide medical advice — our sessions are purely for bonding and keepsake purposes.

While we usually capture beautiful images, there are times when it may be more challenging. If your baby is facing your spine or resting against the placenta, it can limit what we are able to see. Image quality also depends on factors such as gestational age, the baby’s position, the amount of amniotic fluid, and the mother’s body type. Our team will always do everything possible to capture the best and clearest images of any parts of your baby that are visible.

Your baby’s position is the biggest factor in how clear your ultrasound images will be. Some babies are in the perfect spot for amazing pictures, while others may turn away, cuddle up against the placenta or uterine wall, or keep their hands and feet near their face. Our team will gently work to encourage movement for a better view of your baby’s face. Having a small glass of juice or a piece of candy before your scan can sometimes help wake your baby and get them moving — unless your doctor has advised otherwise.

Staying hydrated is one of the easiest ways to improve the clarity of your ultrasound images. Begin increasing your water intake about a week before your scheduled appointment to ensure your amniotic fluid is clear and abundant. Proper hydration can make a noticeable difference in the quality of your 3D, 4D, and 5D ultrasound pictures.

Our top priority is to give you the best possible images of your baby and a wonderful experience. We use advanced, state-of-the-art ultrasound technology to achieve clear, detailed pictures. However, some factors — such as the placenta’s location, the amount and clarity of amniotic fluid, your baby’s position, and the overall fetal environment — are beyond our control and may affect image quality. If we cannot determine your baby’s gender or capture 3D, 4D, HD, or 5D images during your first visit for these reasons, we are happy to offer a complimentary rescan within 14 days on a weekday.

A breech position means your baby’s head is at the top of the uterus with their feet pointing downward. If you know your baby is breech before your 3D or 4D ultrasound, we suggest rescheduling your session a few weeks later to allow time for the baby to turn. While it is possible to get clear images of breech babies, the best and most consistent results are achieved when the baby is head down. Some babies stay breech later in pregnancy or never turn, and that’s okay — as long as there is enough amniotic fluid, we can still often capture great 3D, 4D, HD, or 5D images.

Being plus-size or overweight should not stop you from enjoying a beautiful 4D or 5D elective ultrasound experience. We recommend scheduling your session after 30 weeks of pregnancy, as this allows time for your baby to develop more facial fat for clearer, more detailed images. Staying well-hydrated in the weeks leading up to your appointment is especially important, since a healthy level of amniotic fluid can make a big difference in image quality. With proper preparation, many expectant parents achieve amazing results.
